The Observatorio de los Combustibles Derivados de la Madera (hereinafter OCDM, for its Spanish acronym) (was created within the framework of CORFO’s Programa de Bienes Públicos para la Competitividad (Public Goods for Competitiveness Program). This program seeks to support projects that develop public goods aimed at reducing information asymmetries and uncertainty in the market, and thus improving the competitiveness of industries. In this way, it is expected to accelerate entrepreneurship and
improve productivity in some relevant sectors of the economy.
OCDM is conceived as a permanent instance for the generation of public goods for Los Ríos Region and neighboring regions, and consists of three components:
Study of the characteristics of supply and demand of the market of fuelwoods. The purpose is to increase the involvement of forest plantations in residential heating as well as produce supplies for forest plantartion owners and medium and large consumers of fuelwoods in Los Ríos Region.
Studies are carried out to raise awareness about the benefits of housing thermal insulation and the use of heating technologies based on cleaner fuels (such as pellets, liquified gas, electricity, and solar energy). Potential users include companies and professionals related to the construction industry. The purpose is to promote the reduction of energy consumption at the residential level.
This component analyzes the market for fuels and heating appliances in Los Ríos Region to characterize the different options available and the niche markets. The purpose is to facilitate the use of new technologies and cleaner and more efficient energy sources. Potential users include heating manufacturers, as well as energy companies.
